Physical Activity and Cognitive Decline

Learn how exercise effects symptoms of cognitive decline.

Physical Activity and Cognitive Decline

Cognitive decline and mental illness are serious health issues as we age. Studies have shown an association between exercising and better memory and brain function. Exercise does not have to be limited to lifting weights, walking, or running. Activities like "Tai Chi Chuan, Banduanjin, and Dance appear to have a stronger effect... for older adults with mild cognitive impairment" (Biazus-Sehn et al., 2020). Overall it appears that higher levels of exercise are "associated with better executive function and memory" (Gaertner et al., 2017).
